In this week’s combined Artist Profile you are getting a lot of bang for your buck. A Singer Songwriter like this does not come along every day. Although Robert’s earlier music was slightly sweeter, with the second album he showed us a lot more attitude, grit and coolness wrapped up in the driving synth landscapes. Lyrically, as well, the second album showed a new maturity which easily translated into a hypnotic sexiness. Think Finley Quaye. Or as the music mag Hotpress suggested “as chilled as Al Green in a refrigerator, swoon-some lyrics, brooding widescreen title track that swells the heart.” Obviously there’s a lot there for you to enjoy here.
With the theSpiral project, that is producer David Bickley and Robert himself, the attitude atmosphere is turned up a further notch. Although, the soul very much remains, the musical world becomes a bit more sci-fi’esque, and the mystery further develops, as can be seen in the video of the re-mix of Robert’s track Gold below. Now, travelling through space, we’re taken apart, what remains are the smallest parts, and as these particles we float, dance, and rediscover our murky treasure chests of souls. It goes deep.
In the current music scene in Ireland, this is music in the vein of All Tvvins, Jape, Saint Sister, We cut Corners, Redneck Manifesto, but also, outside of here, bands like Haelos and War on Drugs.
