Berlin is the fulcrum for this antipodean and Irish mix, Julie Chance and Jane Arnison, and it seeps into everything. From the sound, to the subjects matters, to the friends that take part in the videos of the band and their backdrops. Their music gently demands attention, even if, and especially because of its arrival from the fringes, but it does not have to ask twice.
Fiercely independent, this duo makes music that is ALL about female empowerment, independence, rebellion as well as empathy and care. And they also admit that they are “unashamedly hedonistic. There is a huge amount of hedonism in both our psyches, and in our music.” And “we don’t give a fuck.” (District Magazine, 2019)
So what does the music sound like? In a large nutshell one could refer to it as atmospheric trans-pop, but then again that you would have to take with a truckload of salt. It is what it is, and it all about the way that it presents itself, and feels, to these musicians.
Plus, it’s not all about the music, the pair’s videos are equally intoxicating and addictive, and shows just how perfect their music begs for visuals.
Take this Andy Warhol‘esque video for Comfort Fit (watch out for a Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker lookalike) for example:
