Escaping a band to do a mini-album of collaborations with artists, musicians and film-makers can make for some interesting stuff indeed, even if, and maybe because of, the contradictions it also suggests. As the former bassist of the band The Chapters, Michael Murphy, aka Diplomat M, has here created a dark and evocative world of a very experimental kind, which he himself in part has been inspired for by Jeff Koons, John Carpenter, David Lynch, Bobcat Goldthwaite, shopping centres, dEUS, Faith No More, Millionaire and suburban banality. Intrigued?
With discord and vast cosmic bleeps and blurs, a mainly instrumental panorama develops and squirms like a deluge of doom. Still as Michael is able to see the darkness for a play on itself, he often titles the tracks with a tongue in cheek vibe. Diplomat M is deliberate for sure, and surefooted, to boot.
