There is a darkness that envelops as Matinée Idles drive their sound over you, a kind of filmic, dreamy darkness that is full of contrast and flickering outlines of hope and happiness. The lyrics often deal with love’s complications and triumphs. Lead vocals are provided by the Dubliner Kevin Barry, and it is easy to see the self-proclaimed influences of Radiohead, The National and Modest Mouse both in his sound as well as the compositions, but there is also a deeper shade of gloom to it, which is reminiscent of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, or goth rock, post punk, at points. The Matineé Idles have already found placements in major films and TV series such as Brokeback Mountain, Six Feet Under and Breaking Bad, etcetera, so if you are seeking a serious mood enhancer for your project you won’t have to look any further.
