If you are looking for some gorgeous piano music with lots of heart and flair then Cork’s own Emily Magner Hurley might just be the woman you are searching for. The music from her first album covers a wide palette of musical hues, and stretches itself from West Cork out into the wider world and then back again. While she often, on her debut album, veers in the direction of Irish composers such as Bill Wheelan and Micheál Ó Súilleabháin, and likes to play with the Irish traditional elements in gentle but genuine ways, she is also never strays too far from more dreamy, impressionistic European composers such as Chopin, Debussy and Clara Schumann. There’s a lot to enjoy here.
