Happy Valentine’s you all!
You’ve been looking for Gay indie pop/rock with a Dolores O’Riordan (The Cranberries) feel? Look no further. Susie Blue, a foursome from Derry, has got you covered. Meet Susan Donaghy (vocals), John Goodman (drums), Caolan Moore (guitar) and Mark Doherty (bass). Taking on LGBT issues head-on at points, but most often simply dealing with young love and its travails, this is an artist with a lot more attitude and swagger than other young women that cover a similar territory. Susie Blue is raw, and never shy to get physical, thus offering no apologies, in a manner of old reliables such as Sleater-Kinney and PJ Harvey for example, but also manages an edge of glamour, as in People Like Us which has a bit of a St Vincent aura about it. All in all this is a collection of songs that are “driven by shoegaze guitar sounds, punk-pop melodies and Susie’s distinctive, yearning vocals” (Rock N Load) – and they will bite.
