If you seek an authentic, rich, Country sound then Paul Cunningham Jr. is your man. While a singer songwriter based in Ireland, his songs sound like they have just walked their shiny cowboy boots straight out of a studio in Nashville, the heart and home of country music; this might not come as a surprise as Cunningham Jr. has experience of working with an award winning Nashville-based producer.
With lyrics that speak of heartbreak, loss, missing home, and family, Cunningham Jr. is true to the themes most associated with Country music. His songs mix soft, warm tones of female vocals with rough around the edges stronger male vocals – two very different styles – but the mix makes a perfect match to the themes and charms of Country.
One track that I feel is a great example of a truly authentic Country song is ‘Nothing More To Say’. With a strong male vocal and a driving undercurrent throughout, it has a lively, upbeat feel, however all the while it tells of the empty feeling at the end of a relationship when you really have ‘Nothing More To Say’– thus making this song both in texture, theme, and panache: true Country.
