Galway duo Voids have created not only a unique sound, but also a distinctive approach to their writing process. By using the bass guitar as the primary instrument, and then feeding it through specific effects and loops, a whole new range of harmonics are created, which are ‘fundamental’ to the writing process (according to Andrew; one half of Voids).

What makes the pair stand out is the combination of wholesome tones from the bass guitar, and Alison’s hauntingly beautiful voice, which together exude influences of artists, such as, Jaco Pastorius and Chelsea Wolfe.

These influences are in turn reflected in debut EP Begin (2014). A dark, pulsing, electronic undercurrent is consistent in each track, and creates a sonic environment that completely consumes the listener.

The particular style, moods, and overall soundscape found in Voids’ tracks would make them effective for numerous types of placements, but mainly those with themes of a darker nature. For example, the downtempo, dark, sensual, atmospheric feel to track ‘ The Fear’ could be suited to a drama series such as Skins (with its themes of dysfunctional families, mental illness, and substance abuse).

Here’s the video of “The Fear’:
